In partnership with Basketball Ontario, Canada Basketball and the Steve Nash Foundation, Milton Stags Basketball is proud to introduce Steve Nash Youth Basketball.
Steve Nash Youth Basketball is a national youth basketball program designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love for the game of basketball. Milton Stags has launched Steve Nash Youth Basketball in the fall of 2008 with a vision of creating a quality youth basketball program in the community.
Steve Nash Youth Basketball brings each participant closer to their dream of one day playing professional basketball by teaching fundamental skills and life lessons at an early age.
The model for Steve Nash Youth Basketball was established after extensive research of existing community basketball programs from across North America and follows the guidelines of Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD).
The goal of this exciting program is to allow participants the opportunity to maximize their potential, while promoting the importance of youth basketball as a vehicle to build life skills such as character, discipline, self esteem and sportsmanship. All of which benefit our youth as they continue to play basketball or in life.
This program is open to younger boys and girls from about age 8 up to age 14 who wish to play basketball in a less rigorous and competitive program than of Rep teams. There are two phases in this program, fundamental training and development in fall and organized house league in winter and spring. We encourages children to participate regardless of prior experience or ability. The program provides instruction at the beginner level and continues up the skill level as the player develops. The objective is to offer an interested child the chance to receive instruction, play organized basketball and be part of a team. The emphasis on the younger players will be on the development of team concepts, dribbling, passing and shooting skills.
Team uniforms (jersey and shorts) and basketball are provided and included in the full registration fee. The goal is to create a competitive environment giving each athlete an equal chance to enjoy success. During regular house league games, coaches will try to match lines of similar ability. Playing time is controlled so that everyone gets an equal amount of playing time during a game. Games schedule are posted on this site.
Athlete signing up for this program expected to participate regularly. Failure to show up creates imbalance among the teams and detracts from the experience of all the other participants. Please do not sign up if this program conflicts with your child's other activities, or if you intend to participate only sporadically.
